Topic: social hour organization

The Meetups that I've attended who use breakout rooms this way create enough rooms so that a small group can introduce themselves to each other and socialize/chat. Attendees are then randomly assigned to rooms. Depending on the amount of time available, organizers might bring the full group back together and then send them out to rooms again. The idea is that being randomly assigned they will meet different people.

A second model I've participated in assigns either a purpose or an individual to each room and then attendees decide which room to join based upon what or who is the focus. For example, a virtual hiring event will have one company represented in each room and then attendees join based upon who they want to talk to about jobs. Alternatively, people will choose a topic to represent the breakout room and attendees join based upon what topics they wish to discuss as a group. There's no presenter/leader. There is a group chat based upon the selected topic.

There are obviously many ways to organize this, but these are the ones I've experienced.

I'm breaking this out into a separate topic

I'm game for anything!

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jun 18 2021 at 13:15):

What @Jane Lusby and I had discussed was something a bit different

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jun 18 2021 at 13:15):

Here is a draft blog post trying to explain it

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jun 18 2021 at 13:16):

I think the difference here was the idea that this might partly be a time to just do "Rust work" but in a more social way

view this post on Zulip Doc Jones (Jun 18 2021 at 13:22):

Maybe there's a better title than social hour. I see the value of having informal project time, but I wouldn't expect to have a meeting or do work at a social thing.

This idea sounds more like your writing sessions which were also a cool way to do Rust work across wg boundaries. I can for sure see the value here.

view this post on Zulip Doc Jones (Jun 18 2021 at 13:25):

I was looking forward to getting to "know" more rustaceans in a non working context, though. :-)

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jun 18 2021 at 15:56):

Let's see what @Jane Lusby thinks. I am game to rename it.

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jun 18 2021 at 15:56):

I agree it's not "social hour" -- could just be better to call it like "free form breakouts" or something

view this post on Zulip Doc Jones (Jun 18 2021 at 16:01):

I like the idea that people can suggest whatever they want in a breakout room. It's a more experimental and flexible model than the ones I've experienced so far.

view this post on Zulip Jane Lusby (Jun 18 2021 at 16:12):

My goal with the idea was primarily to enable what you described @Doc Jones

view this post on Zulip Jane Lusby (Jun 18 2021 at 16:12):

It's supposed to be a way to get to know eachother

view this post on Zulip Jane Lusby (Jun 18 2021 at 16:13):

The breakout room ideas are intended to work like ice breakers to make it easier to separate into groups and talk, but there's no reason they have to be about work

view this post on Zulip Jane Lusby (Jun 18 2021 at 16:13):

So I'd prefer to change the structure if it's getting in the way of the social aspect rather than change the name

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jun 18 2021 at 16:14):

I wonder if just having a few other "keyed up" rooms might be useful as well

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jun 18 2021 at 16:14):

Not sure what a more "social theme" might be

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jun 18 2021 at 16:14):

"Local weather systems" :)

view this post on Zulip Sean Chen (he/him) (Jun 18 2021 at 16:19):

A great icebreaker question I got asked in a group setting recently was "what's your favorite sensation?" That yielded a lot of really interesting and varied answers from people.

That's just a suggested question; feel free to go with a different one. Going with an icebreaker question has been a good way to get people to open up at least a little bit

Yooo, if someone wants to lead a guided tour through the GhostCell implementation I would love that

I just want excuses to use it and to figure out where it works well

https://github.com/matthieu-m/ghost-collections is probably the coolest application of GhostCell I've seen so far

So-- @Jane Lusby I wanted to post that blog post, do you feel it is still basically fine? Do you want to make any edits to clarify the plan?

I think we could add something about having more casual rooms instead, since @Doc Jones already raised this issue I don't want anyone else to get the wrong idea from the one example that these are meant to be productive hangouts

view this post on Zulip Jane Lusby (Jun 18 2021 at 17:27):

gonna tweek it a bit one sec

happy to do that if the next social hour works in my timezone and calendar ;)
but really, there's not a lot to guide through there. GhostCell consists of, like, 6 methods or so, all of which do exactly nothing^^

A lot of the ways lifetimes are being leveraged in GhostCell (as well as in the StaticRc crate as well) still seem like black magic to me

view this post on Zulip RalfJ (Jun 20 2021 at 09:54):

so let's make this a guided tour not just over the implementation but also the correctness argument, then ;)

@Jane Lusby so we haven't had many suggestions =)
