We will have another "social hour" at today's CTCFT! Post ideas for breakout rooms here! Don't use this topic for general chatter, though.

React to ideas you're interested in with a :+1: emoji

@Jane Lusby Can I get a gamedev room?

view this post on Zulip RalfJ (Jul 19 2021 at 19:55):

is there still interest in a GhostCell tour / discussion or was that a joke?^^ I have like 30min after the meeting. I'm also happy to answer all your Miri questions, alternatively.

what is GhostCell?

view this post on Zulip Josh Triplett (Jul 19 2021 at 19:56):

@RalfJ I'm super interested in hearing more about GhostCell if others are.

/me is happy to be in a lang-team initiatives room if people want that room to exist.

short version: an interior mutability data structure a PhD student at MPI-SWS / Saarland University developed that I helped them verify and we published a paper about

view this post on Zulip Josh Triplett (Jul 19 2021 at 20:00):

@RalfJ One thing I'd be interested in regarding GhostCell: what does the path look like for interior mutability with fine-grained synchronization (either locking or RCU/hazard-pointers/etc), in future research?

view this post on Zulip RalfJ (Jul 19 2021 at 20:01):

@Josh Triplett hm, that seems pretty orthogonal to me

view this post on Zulip Josh Triplett (Jul 19 2021 at 20:02):

@RalfJ I was thinking about how the original paper talked about the interactions with locking, and thinking about how that will evolve over time.

"the breakout rooms exist" but where do they exist ?

view this post on Zulip RalfJ (Jul 19 2021 at 20:03):

crossbeam has epoch-based reclamation, possibly the other mechanisms could have a similar API

view this post on Zulip Josh Triplett (Jul 19 2021 at 20:03):

@lqd Click "Choose Breakout Room" in the bottom toolbar in Zoom.

thanks josh

view this post on Zulip RalfJ (Jul 19 2021 at 20:05):

@nikomatsakis can we get screen sharing enabled? that would be quite useful :D

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Jul 19 2021 at 20:05):

@Jane Lusby is hosting now, but I can see if I can enable it

view this post on Zulip Jane Lusby (Jul 19 2021 at 20:06):

i think you might have killed the breakout rooms

view this post on Zulip Josh Triplett (Jul 19 2021 at 20:06):

Yeah, we may have to let them collapse and re-create them.

The dungeon collapsed, fortunately we did not die.

Chat messages in the session often contain helpful links or other information. Would it be possible for whoever is the host to publish those somewhere after the session? All chat messages are saved inside the zoom folder on one's hard drive.
