I intended to spend some time today looking into the literature on incremental compilation to see if I could find anything which might be useful for us, or similar to codegen unit partitioning - I've not been able to find much of anything (which might just be poor searching).

There are some old papers which discuss incremental parsing; incremental compilation as it relates to debugger implementation; partitioning of code for parallelisation or multi-processors; and partitioning schemes for compiling circuits - but nothing that I could see that seemed particularly useful to us. Has anyone else had a look and could provide a starting point (I'm happy to do the reading if I can find some papers to read)?

I created a group on Zotero that has some thoughts on one or two papers that I did look at. Let me know if you want added to that.
