Stream: project-ffi-unwind

Topic: archive-#8

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 16:01):

Is there a way to mark topics "resolved"?

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 16:02):

I could mute it, but what I really want is a way to indicate to anyone just joining the stream that this topic is only of historical value at this point

I think we should try to be more disciplined about properly using threads in zulip

view this post on Zulip gnzlbg (Oct 18 2019 at 16:45):

maybe you could change the title of the thread to indicate that ?

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 16:55):

I haven't used Zulip prior to joining this stream; do you have any suggestions for what that "discipline" would comprise?

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 16:55):

I generally feel that threads are under-utilized in Slack, so my preference is to err on the side of over-use here, then gracefully "expire" them somehow...I just don't see how that last step would work here (possibly because I lack sufficient admin permissions for the stream)

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 16:56):

I do not see a way for me to change the topic title, but maybe Niko can

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 16:57):

Even without the ability to archive topics, it might be good to pin some of them

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 16:57):

I don't actually know if Zulip supports either feature

view this post on Zulip gnzlbg (Oct 18 2019 at 17:03):

So what I try to do is, everytime something is mentioned that's a different topic than what the current thread has, branch of a new thread (you can also move comments from a thread to a new one, so that can be cleaned up a bit afterwards as well)

view this post on Zulip gnzlbg (Oct 18 2019 at 17:04):

This does not make sense for all threads, e.g., a"meeting" thread contains a meeting

view this post on Zulip gnzlbg (Oct 18 2019 at 17:05):

To get a feeling maybe just hang out a bit in the t-compiler or other streams

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 17:14):

I'll do that!

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 17:15):

I.e. I'll hang out in those streams

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 17:16):

Huh, seems like nothing really gets archived anywhere, e.g. stream:t-compiler topic:#52531-error-pattern-in-ui-tests

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 17:22):

I guess you can pin streams but not topics

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 18 2019 at 17:23):

....and apparently you can only rename "blocks" at a time. Hm. I need to spend more time getting acquainted with Zulip.

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 21 2019 at 20:32):

I tend to think of zulip topics as vaguely analogous to email subject lines

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 21 2019 at 20:32):

but maybe I'm showing my age :P

view this post on Zulip BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Oct 21 2019 at 20:39):

I genuinely miss using email as the primary form of async communication

view this post on Zulip Josh Triplett (Oct 25 2019 at 13:48):

I really like the way Zulip works like email but without the perception of "emails need to be longer".

view this post on Zulip Josh Triplett (Oct 25 2019 at 13:48):

Chat with subjects and threads is kinda what I want most of the time.

view this post on Zulip Josh Triplett (Oct 25 2019 at 13:49):

Zulip is the first service I've used that genuinely makes me think I don't need email.
