Topic: How to make lang team aware of reference issues?

view this post on Zulip isHavvy (Mar 04 2021 at 04:47):

When we need input from the lang team, we don't have an efficient way of asking y'all for it, or at least, that's how it feels to me.

You mean issues in the reference documentation?

cc @nikomatsakis re: lang team process and raising things to the lang team

@isHavvy would nomination work for you?

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Mar 04 2021 at 18:57):

I can update the triage script to include more repos!

view this post on Zulip isHavvy (Mar 05 2021 at 06:50):

Sure. If there's a nomination tag. I would also like it written down somewhere how to do so, so it's also not just tribal knowledge. Although I don't really know where that place would be? If nowhere currently, then perhaps processes like this could be part of the lang team charter?

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Mar 05 2021 at 11:18):

Yep. I also want to visit the nomination process regardless, I'm not very happy with it.

(Just noticed this comment; somehow glossed over it earlier) It's more often the pull requests from people I've not seen before giving information on a topic I'm not well versed in, or even my own writing when I'm not sure whether something is stable or not. The issues are usually fine; those tend to have more editorial questions than questions about how the language works.

That seems like a whole 'nother can of worms. I'm curious as to what they are, but not in a constructive way. Probably worth opening a new zulip topic or bringing it up in a meeting. Unless you want to have that discussion beforehand;

Also, thinking a bit more about this, I'm not sure the nomination tag would actually be the best. Some of it is just questions of facts that have already been decided, and having everybody discuss it in a meeting would be a bad use of time.

We're doing pretriage a bit before meetings, so it's quite possible to move from nomination to FCP (or merging) without discussion. I wouldn't worry about that too much I think

are these notification groups still in effect?: https://rustc-dev-guide.rust-lang.org/notification-groups/about.html

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Mar 08 2021 at 20:02):

@isHavvy so the current process is basically "somebody adds the I-nominated label" and that's it :) what I would like is a few things, but one of them is that by the time we get to the meeting, we have already done some 'pre-triage" and we know (a) what question are we trying to answer and (b) the background information we need to answer it is ideally available.

I think part of this might be having a bot that you use to nominate things where you provide a bit more info

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Mar 08 2021 at 20:03):

and part of it might be an async pre-triage effort (sort of like #t-compiler/wg-prioritization that notices nominations and "asks the obvious questions" and/or redirects to a smaller group if that's appropriate

view this post on Zulip isHavvy (Mar 09 2021 at 07:16):

So if I just add an I-nominated tag too the reference, will that work?

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Mar 09 2021 at 17:32):

@isHavvy let's start with that, i'm going to add it now :)

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Mar 09 2021 at 17:32):

do you have any things you want to be nominated now/

view this post on Zulip isHavvy (Mar 10 2021 at 00:45):

Definitely the last issue I filed; there's probably more, but I'll go through the PRs a bit later.

The first round of this felt successful to me. Thanks lang team!

@isHavvy yay! thanks!

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Mar 17 2021 at 20:45):
