ugh I miss "person is typing"

Maybe bring it up in #zulip ? I think there's an employee that hangs out in there?

There's an open issue for it, I forget which though.

Also from the other thread:

Right now typing indicators are only used in “Private Messages” views.

The most likely big change to typing indicators is that we will add them for stream conversations. This will require some thought for large streams, in terms of both usability and performance.

so a known issue but won't be implemented in the short term

So I guess take this as a handful of :+1: to the feature request.

why do people want it

view this post on Zulip Tshepang Lekhonkhobe (Jul 01 2020 at 16:41):

I find it distracting

view this post on Zulip Tshepang Lekhonkhobe (Jul 01 2020 at 16:45):

... and invasive

looking at the issue, it's kool that someone mentioned ability to disable it

Maybe it could even be opt-in with a checkbox in the reply window? (near "Press Enter to send")

view this post on Zulip XAMPPRocky (Jul 01 2020 at 16:54):

@Tshepang Lekhonkhobe I find it useful in meetings as you can ask something like "Does anyone have any thoughts?" and you can see whether people are writing or if you can move on.

view this post on Zulip XAMPPRocky (Jul 01 2020 at 16:55):

It also makes it feel more interactive, I'm less likely to look away if i know someone is about to write a reply.

yeah, running meetings for the infra team has been way harder since we switched from discord

view this post on Zulip Pietro Albini (Jul 01 2020 at 16:59):

it either fills the thread with "react to this if you have something to say" or it delays a meeting a ton

view this post on Zulip Tshepang Lekhonkhobe (Jul 01 2020 at 17:26):

alright, makes sense

view this post on Zulip DPC (Jul 01 2020 at 18:36):

i like the idea tbh, also it is useful during meetings

I don't think it needs to be that prominent, but it should be a setting.
