Stream: zulip

Topic: stream names too long

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Oct 08 2020 at 15:08):

the zulip interface doesn't seem to let me increase the width of the right column with the list of streams

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Oct 08 2020 at 15:09):

this then means that streams pairs like #t-compiler/wg-prioritization and #t-compiler/wg-prioritization/alerts are indistinguishable in presentation on the right hand side

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Oct 08 2020 at 15:10):

in the short term, I'm going to check with @Santiago Pastorino about whether we can/should rename the alerts stream in some way to make them distinct

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Oct 08 2020 at 15:11):

(for me, they are both cut off: #t-compiler/wg-prioriti... and #t-compiler/wg-priori...; they are cut off at different points because the number of unread messages in each differ, by a large amount, so the number of digits in that unread messages box is different widths)

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Oct 08 2020 at 15:12):

but in general this seems like something that one needs to think about up front when making new zulip streams? That, or the Zulip developers should address it...

It certainly wouldn't hurt to make an Zulip issue about it, even if we wanted to work around the problem here.

view this post on Zulip Santiago Pastorino (Oct 08 2020 at 15:22):

it's not a problem for me because I see t-compiler/wg-prioritization (no ...) and t-compiler/wg-prioritizatio... and then I know that the second one is the alerts one and also if you hover the mouse over you see pointers to it being the alerts one, but yes if it's an issue for others we should probably rename

cc @nikomatsakis as maybe a reason not to prefix with team name for things

view this post on Zulip cuviper (Oct 08 2020 at 17:23):

or find shorter prefixes

view this post on Zulip cuviper (Oct 08 2020 at 17:24):

(at the risk of getting more cryptic)

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 08 2020 at 17:59):

@simulacrum yeah, I considered that

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 08 2020 at 17:59):

I do think that's a problem

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 08 2020 at 17:59):

I'm not sure what I think is the best solution :)

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 08 2020 at 18:00):

I do also see value in having some visible structure

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 08 2020 at 18:00):

maybe we should file a zulip issue

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 08 2020 at 18:00):

to start :)

view this post on Zulip nikomatsakis (Oct 08 2020 at 18:00):

it seems..so eminently fixable

view this post on Zulip Cyphase (Oct 08 2020 at 20:13):

Definitely open an issue, and mention it's from the Rust community.

view this post on Zulip nagisa (Oct 09 2020 at 01:11):

as a workaround using the t dialog might help somewhat

view this post on Zulip DPC (Oct 10 2020 at 21:27):

yeah besides that I remember the colour scheme for both streams which makes it easier to distinguish :stuck_out_tongue:
