Topic: emoji reactions with zero count

So, a couple different meetings are using emoji reactions as a way to gather rough counts of partcipant feedback

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Mar 26 2021 at 20:30):

e.g. for backport decisions we take a rough tally from participants by asking them to hit one of the following: :back: , :stop: ,

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Mar 26 2021 at 20:30):

in order to ease things for the partcipants in the meeting, I always prefill the values. So I’ll go and add each of the above, like so:

I noticed that another meeting lead was doing something similar ,but leveraging triagebot

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Mar 26 2021 at 20:32):

Either approach (me adding it myself, or a robot adding it) has the disadantages that the numbers are always “off-by-one”. (Unless I were to go and “unclick” my prefill results, that is)

So I was just wondering: IS there some extension to the Zulip format that would let us add these emojis to a comment, but attach the number “0” to them?

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Mar 26 2021 at 20:33):

basically to cover this “prefill” case?

I'm not aware of anything like this, I suspect that the upstream developers would prefer to finish off or fix any problems with /poll rather than implement as niche a feature as this.

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Mar 26 2021 at 20:35):

yeah I was wondering about that

view this post on Zulip pnkfelix (Mar 26 2021 at 20:35):

I guess I should find out if /poll works on mobile devices yet

I think I had a proposal at some point to do this but didn't follow up

to do which? Fix /poll ? Or add zero-counted emojis?

view this post on Zulip simulacrum (Mar 26 2021 at 20:39):

zero counted emojis, but I guess I didn't file it

view this post on Zulip simulacrum (Mar 26 2021 at 20:39):

https://github.com/zulip/zulip-mobile/issues/3205 is the mobile poll issue

view this post on Zulip simulacrum (Mar 26 2021 at 20:40):

we could in theory have a polling-based, at minimum, and ideally webhook-based system where the bot updates the comment with actual numbers

view this post on Zulip simulacrum (Mar 26 2021 at 20:40):

but in practice that doesn't really seem worth it

I would say that 'fixing poll' feels much harder to me and also .. I actually really like the reaction based voting

view this post on Zulip simulacrum (Mar 26 2021 at 20:41):

(poll has felt clunky to me)

view this post on Zulip davidtwco (Mar 26 2021 at 20:51):

It's certainly a more involved fix, and there are absolutely ways that poll could be more usable, but in my experience with a handful of $dayjob-related contributions to Zulip, they strongly prefer to see progress on a full feature that fixes a problem rather than a in-the-meantime solution.

view this post on Zulip simulacrum (Mar 26 2021 at 20:52):

well, I mean that it feels like the emoji thing might be the long-term solution to simple polls that don't -- for example -- need after the fact editing

that does make sense to me
