A common complaint I hear from new members is that they don't know where or how to post on our Zulip. I was thinking, would it be possible to add a new default read-only for members stream called #rules or #welcome, that contains a couple of topics about Rust, Zulip, where to post, where to get started etc? Similar to announcement/rules channels you see on Discord.

There is also #new members, though that doesn't do what you're suggesting.

this seems like a very good idea to me, I guess a stream like that can be configured as read-only or something

Also, I guess Zulip is a bit more... complex than other platforms, so maybe info on how to use Zulip in general might be good?

I don't remember if Zulip has a guide when you first launch it or something, but I think I remember seeing people being confused with streams and topics etc...

@Welcome bot messages you when you join. When I joined the message was:

Hello, and welcome to Zulip!

This is a private message from me, Welcome Bot. Here are some tips to get you started:

Download our Desktop and mobile apps
Customize your account and notifications on your Settings page
Type ? to check out Zulip's keyboard shortcuts

The most important shortcut is r to reply.

Practice sending a few messages by replying to this conversation. If you're not into keyboards, that's okay too; clicking anywhere on this message will also do the trick!

i think people when they join don't realise that streams are opt-in and they expect behaviour similar to discord where you see all the channels/messages,

I wonder what's the current behaviour if the user isn't subscribed to a stream and clicks to a link to the stream (since i expect many join here after clicking on stream and/or topic links shared in other places)

It clearly shows you a subscribe button when you are not subscribed to a stream.

It's... really confusing.

Or, well... it's not as clear what the norms are for interaction. When to make a new topic or where it's okay or etc.

I like the rule of thumb "just like an e-mail subject"

feedback from someone who came to this server via a link from github:

It was quite hard for me to get here. Clicking the link in the README, then signing up, led me to the general Rust Zulip. I had to re-click the link in the repo after signing up to get here. Still not sure if I'm replying correctly. :grinning:

Yeah that's annoying
