Topic: Discord is Getting Threads

view this post on Zulip Ibraheem Ahmed (Jun 16 2021 at 23:49):

Discord is getting threads (it's already in the API docs, here's a demo). That is the most commonly cited feature of zulip that makes it a better fit for lang discussions than discord. I personally much find discord easier to use and having a better UX (not that it matters much)... would discord getting threads change anything, or is zulip fine/better?

I think we should wait to see how easy they are to use first.

Also, I personally like that Zulip allows logging in with GitHub. But that's minor.

I don't see threads changing the core "discord is more about synchronous chat" difference, really. I see them more as addressing the "can we have #‌general-1 and #‌general-2 for simultaneous conversations?" requests. But we'll see.

We've spent a lot of energy switching to Zulip, and attaching bots to Zulip.

It'd take more than "something else might be getting closer to parity" to switch back; something else would have to be substantially better.

Discord would need to stop requiring phone numbers i think. (To be fair, though, I only heard rumours that they are required now)

That's a security level that can be enabled by a server, it's not a requirement.

So threads are out: https://blog.discord.com/connect-the-conversation-with-threads-on-discord-3f5fa8b0f6b, I think they would work great for this community, but I don't see them being substantially better.

I personally think they're a major improvement for Discord, to help provide another level of organization beneath channels, but I don't think they're a substitute for Zulip topics within streams.

Can you move messages into a thread after the fact in discord? You can create topics on zulip after the fact if for example a discussion gets sidetracked.

That Discord's threading is more similar to Slack than Zulip. The named threads are meant to pop up temporarily every once in a while, but people still converse in one main "thread" in the channel. While in Zulip, the threads explicitly organize all the parallel discussions.

I used to love flowdock threads but zulip is my next-best favourite

The Discord threads seem so confusing.

Discord threads' auto-archiving time window settings are gated by server boost and are probably unsuitable for our use

Discord threads are also really difficult to discover in my opinion

And they go away after 24 hours, and then I'm not sure how to find them. Ah, there's a list if you click a button at the top.
