Topic: Nextcloud Calendar

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 12:57, on Zulip):

Hey following up on improving our calendar situation, and I went ahead an set up a nextcloud instance to test out making a complete calendar for the rust-lang org. Here's what I have so far. This includes the compiler team google calendar and custom events for the rest of teams since it was hard to find the links to their calendars. It's definitely missing some teams.

Pietro Albini (Mar 06 2020 at 13:42, on Zulip):

tbh I'm not thrilled to self-host things on our infra

Pietro Albini (Mar 06 2020 at 13:43, on Zulip):

if we can get calendars in a managed environment (even sponsored) I'd be way more happy

Pietro Albini (Mar 06 2020 at 13:46, on Zulip):

the maintenance work is not trivial, especially with upgrades and backups

Pietro Albini (Mar 06 2020 at 13:46, on Zulip):

and in infra we're trying to reduce the work we need to do to maintain our services

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 13:50, on Zulip):

@Pietro Albini There's no reason we couldn't have a managed instance. That is possible, I made my own instance because that's the quickest way for us try it out without paying, or committing to anything.

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 13:51, on Zulip):

fwiw, it took like 15 minutes to setup. It took longer to setup the domain (which I bought for a separate idea but haven't gotten around to yet.)

Pietro Albini (Mar 06 2020 at 13:52, on Zulip):

yep, but we need to setup backups, periodically check they work, keep the instance up to date...

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 13:52, on Zulip):

Again, I would also prefer if we had a managed instance. Those are available.

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 13:55, on Zulip):

We could even try to have it donated to us.

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 13:57, on Zulip):

But we have to know if we would even use it first, before we think about how we maintain it.

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 14:20, on Zulip):

On the topic of the calendar itself. An important feature to me in nextcloud that I haven't been able to find any other calendar service is having a public link containing multiple calendars. The link is just combination of all the calendars shown on the left sidebar. Which means that you can have different calendars with different people and permissions adding events while having a single place that people can see.

This is also embeddable, so it would actually be possible to have the team schedule on the website or forge, or something directly so people could easily see what meetings are happening.

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 14:33, on Zulip):

And we can easily have calendars that bigger or smaller depending on the context. For example this link also shows the community events that are happening.

Amanieu (Mar 06 2020 at 14:47, on Zulip):

@XAMPPRocky Lang team calendar:

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 16:02, on Zulip):

@Amanieu Thanks! Here's an updated link with the lang team.

BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Mar 06 2020 at 19:59, on Zulip):

That's very cool! What does the big "Admin" bubble on each calendar in the sidebar mean?

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 20:01, on Zulip):

@BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) I believe that's because they were all created by the admin account.

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 20:02, on Zulip):

Because you could have "Compiler Team (alice)" and "Compiler Team (bob)" calendars for example.

BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Mar 06 2020 at 20:11, on Zulip):

Ah, okay. It would be nice if that could be hidden, since most users probably don't need to know who created the calendar, but I don't know if this calendar service has an option for that

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 20:22, on Zulip):

Oh yeah, here's links to the calendars source and docs. Some of the docs are bit out of date as some of these features are new.

XAMPPRocky (Mar 06 2020 at 20:25, on Zulip):

@BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) I don't know if that's built in, but you could file an issue.

BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Mar 06 2020 at 21:24, on Zulip):

I couldn't find anything in the existing issues list, documentation, or forum about such a feature, so I went ahead and filed an issue:

Charles Lew (Mar 07 2020 at 10:07, on Zulip):

link to t-compiler's calendar is at

XAMPPRocky (Mar 07 2020 at 10:26, on Zulip):

@Charles Lew Thanks, I already imported that one into "Compiler Team".

Charles Lew (Mar 08 2020 at 02:17, on Zulip):

oh yeah, i saw there's no upcoming compiler meetings in March and thought it wasn't imported. It's just the meetings haven't been scheduled yet i think.

Charles Lew (Mar 08 2020 at 02:18, on Zulip):

XAMPPRocky (Mar 08 2020 at 09:56, on Zulip):

@Charles Lew Thanks for clarifying as I was also confused by that.

XAMPPRocky (Mar 09 2020 at 16:15, on Zulip):

Hmm, actually it seems there's an issue with one of the events in the ics file, because those events are there on google.

spacekookie (Mar 23 2020 at 13:25, on Zulip):

@XAMPPRocky is the next cloud calendar just pulling in from Google atm? Or how would I add to that? (sorry if I missed something there)

XAMPPRocky (Mar 23 2020 at 13:26, on Zulip):

For some teams it’s google for others I manually put in the event

XAMPPRocky (Mar 23 2020 at 13:27, on Zulip):

If you give me the team and google link I can add it.

spacekookie (Mar 23 2020 at 22:11, on Zulip):

The CLI team is having meetings every monday

XAMPPRocky (Mar 24 2020 at 09:20, on Zulip):

What time, and is there a agenda document?

spacekookie (Apr 06 2020 at 18:36, on Zulip):

@XAMPPRocky sorry it took so long:

XAMPPRocky (Apr 06 2020 at 18:36, on Zulip):

@spacekookie If you have a calendar send me that and I can import it.

spacekookie (Apr 06 2020 at 18:41, on Zulip):

I don't yet, I was thinking of just using the credentials you posted, don't have a calendar yet

XAMPPRocky (Apr 06 2020 at 18:43, on Zulip):

@spacekookie I definitely wouldn't recommend that. I will eventually shut that server down.

XAMPPRocky (Apr 06 2020 at 18:44, on Zulip):

In fact I plan to wipe it soon because I have an issue upgrading the instance.

spacekookie (Apr 06 2020 at 18:47, on Zulip):

Aah okay. So is there gonna be a nextcould calendar then?

spacekookie (Apr 06 2020 at 18:48, on Zulip):

I liked the idea

XAMPPRocky (Apr 06 2020 at 19:20, on Zulip):

@spacekookie I haven't pushed for it, mainly because I haven't had the time fill it out more and discuss it. If there was something other nextcloud I would probably use that, but I haven't found any other calendar software that lets you display multiple calendars in a single view like that.

spacekookie (Apr 07 2020 at 09:07, on Zulip):

I think nextcloud is probably a good candidate because getting a hosted instance is quite easy

BatmanAoD (Kyle Strand) (Apr 07 2020 at 13:29, on Zulip):

nikomatsakis (Apr 08 2020 at 18:56, on Zulip):

I have to say

nikomatsakis (Apr 08 2020 at 18:57, on Zulip):

that it would be really nice to have something equivalent to google docs

nikomatsakis (Apr 08 2020 at 18:57, on Zulip):

but where the teams and access control maps to Rust teams/working-groups/etc

nikomatsakis (Apr 08 2020 at 18:57, on Zulip):

does nextcloud support "message boards" of any kind, @XAMPPRocky? (I know we have internals, just curious)

XAMPPRocky (Apr 08 2020 at 19:06, on Zulip):

@nikomatsakis It does have a kind of message board. It definitely has messaging (and calls) for people internal to the instance and it has a third party app that enables the instance to act as a federated social network like Mastodon.

XAMPPRocky (Apr 08 2020 at 19:09, on Zulip):

but where the teams and access control maps to Rust teams/working-groups/etc

Nextcloud can definitely handle this, it has a lot of features in this regard. If you're familiar with old Google Plus "Circles" it has that which lets you provide permissions to a group. It does also have OpenID/OAuth login available. The main work would be figuring out how to allow that to map to rust-lang/team.

Pietro Albini (Apr 09 2020 at 21:01, on Zulip):

btw yeah over time I've been feeling like this is something we need, especially with a gdocs-like solution that's integrated with the team repo
