Topic: scheduling a design meeting

nikomatsakis (Nov 14 2019 at 19:45, on Zulip):

So hey @T-lang -- I sent out an e-mail with a doodle link regarding scheduling a second design meeting, but so far nobody's responded. I'm not sure if this is just "need reminders" or if this is a "not sure if I can deal with a 2nd meeting" (which is a concern of mine). I'm open to "we don't have time for two meetings" -- but I would definitely like to talk out how we should be having longer conversatiosn (and maybe some of the other goals).

pnkfelix (Nov 14 2019 at 19:58, on Zulip):

to be honest one reason I am hesitating to fill out this poll is that in a month my time zone is going to be shifted 6 hours

pnkfelix (Nov 14 2019 at 19:58, on Zulip):

and I am having trouble predicting what times I will be available then. Even though really it should open up slots in my schedule...

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:27, on Zulip):

Hey @T-lang -- I want to bring this topic up again. I really feel the need for us to have more time to do in-depth discussion.

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:27, on Zulip):

We do have I suppose 4 responses on the doodle, let me see what overlaps exist

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:27, on Zulip):

heh, relatively little

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:29, on Zulip):

Well, it looks like 11am or 12am (Boston time) might be a candidate, perhaps on Wednesday (I think it'd be good to do a day other than Thursday)

pnkfelix (Dec 06 2019 at 14:29, on Zulip):

I wrote my response based on my Paris time zone

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:29, on Zulip):

Yeah, @pnkfelix, I was ignoring your line :)

pnkfelix (Dec 06 2019 at 14:29, on Zulip):

okay good

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:29, on Zulip):

On the premise that your constraints will soon look a lot more like mine

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:29, on Zulip):

Or at least a "subset" of mine

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:30, on Zulip):

That is likely false given that you will have distinct family obligations / schedule, but maybe true-ish :)

pnkfelix (Dec 06 2019 at 14:30, on Zulip):

constraints are still likely subset, i.e. availability likely to be superset, yes

pnkfelix (Dec 06 2019 at 14:30, on Zulip):

i.e. you serve as reasonable proxy for me.

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:31, on Zulip):

As far as things to use it for, some of the topics I think might be great to spend in-depth time discussing:

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 14:32, on Zulip):

I imagine that just explaining stuff would do a lot not only to keep all of us in the loop, but also to educate the community -- though I wonder if there might even be room for a kind of irregular "lecture series" more in that vein

Josh Triplett (Dec 06 2019 at 18:36, on Zulip):

Also reviewing output and progress from shepherds.

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 19:40, on Zulip):

I was thinking more about this meeting. I think we should be thinking hard about how to enable participation in t-lang with a smaller, more directed time investment.

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 19:41, on Zulip):

For example, @Taylor Cramer in their new position has less time to participate; @RalfJ doesn't have enough but has obvious expertise; etc.

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 19:41, on Zulip):

I am thinking specifically that we should aim to have triage be a kind of "optional" (and maybe even rotating) duty

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 19:42, on Zulip):

I want to say "with the goal of making uncontroversial decisions" but maybe that's too limited

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 19:42, on Zulip):

Anyway getting a second meeting up and going will (I think) be an important part of that

nikomatsakis (Dec 06 2019 at 19:42, on Zulip):

One that is scheduled more in advance (and potentially moves at times to accommodate the needs of infrequent guests)

Taylor Cramer (Dec 06 2019 at 22:22, on Zulip):

I missed this poll the first time around and have since added my response.

nikomatsakis (Dec 19 2019 at 19:32, on Zulip):

Hello @T-lang -- so I took a look at the results from this doodle and there are really only a few viable options. Basically Monday at 11 or Monday at 12 (Eastern time). The former is early for @Josh Triplett, so Monday at noon is perhaps preferred. (I'm just ignoring @pnkfelix since they have moved to the US in the meantime).

What would people think about Monday at noon as a time for "deeper discussion"? I imagine this would start in early January.

nikomatsakis (Dec 19 2019 at 21:52, on Zulip):

OK so I think @Josh Triplett would strongly prefer 9:00 PT / 12:00 ET / 18:00 CEST

nikomatsakis (Dec 19 2019 at 21:52, on Zulip):

So far everybody seems to think this "could work" who I've talked to, which isn't all that many folks :)

nikomatsakis (Dec 19 2019 at 21:52, on Zulip):

But I'm going to go ahead and put it on the calendar, starting from Jan 6

nikomatsakis (Dec 19 2019 at 21:53, on Zulip):

And people can accept the invite (or not) and comment here
