nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:46, on Zulip):

Hey @WG-async-foundations -- we having a book meeting? Sorry I'm late.

nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:46, on Zulip):

I've kind of lost track of the status of the book =)

Florian Gilcher (Aug 13 2019 at 16:49, on Zulip):

I've got a question. Do we really want to open a book on the new shiny feature like this? :) https://rust-lang.github.io/async-book/01_getting_started/03_state_of_async_rust.html

Florian Gilcher (Aug 13 2019 at 16:49, on Zulip):

It's pretty heavy on the negatives

Florian Gilcher (Aug 13 2019 at 16:50, on Zulip):

I appreciate the need for honesty, but reading it, it mainly feels like "this is an alpha feature we stabilised"

nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:51, on Zulip):

Heh

nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:51, on Zulip):

In general I would still like to adust some of the ordering of the book; but my branch kind of bitrotted away

nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:51, on Zulip):

I might try to re-do it now that we have a setup (I think?) that isn't based on strict line numbers etc, that made it extra hard to do

nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:52, on Zulip):

@Florian Gilcher I think a PR adjusting the opening to be a bit "sunnier" wouldn't be amiss :)

Florian Gilcher (Aug 13 2019 at 16:52, on Zulip):

:+1:

nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:54, on Zulip):

I'm looking over the list of issues on the book

nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:54, on Zulip):

there's not much there -- @Florian Gilcher maybe file an issue regarding intro? do you think you will try to do a rewrite (or find someone to do so?)

@Taylor Cramer are you working on the "surprisingly hard things"?

Taylor Cramer (Aug 13 2019 at 16:57, on Zulip):

Uh, not sure where my response went

Taylor Cramer (Aug 13 2019 at 16:57, on Zulip):

yes, I am

Taylor Cramer (Aug 13 2019 at 16:57, on Zulip):

although I had prioritized the select/join stuff over it, so I didn't do it last week

nikomatsakis (Aug 13 2019 at 16:58, on Zulip):

ok.

Me too. I've been a semi-professional (i.e., paid but part-time) proofreader since 1962, including thousands of pages of IEEE and IEC standards. (FYI, I accidentally ended up as the final editor for the pre-publication draft of the initial IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) standard.)
