Topic: Parser lecture

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:42, on Zulip):

@Santiago Pastorino how is the state of docs wrt. the parser?

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:44, on Zulip):

I think this https://rustc-dev-guide.rust-lang.org/the-parser.html is all we have

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:45, on Zulip):

ok that's very high level

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:45, on Zulip):

yep

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:45, on Zulip):

@Santiago Pastorino do you want a Q&A with me?

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:46, on Zulip):

that would be great

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:46, on Zulip):

what about a lecture?

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:47, on Zulip):

I could do a lecture... not sure what it involves wrt. wg-learning... I prepare some notes and talk for a while and show y'all some parts of the parser and you ask questions?

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:53, on Zulip):

yeah, it's more like preparing a talk, recording it and have the group making a chapter out of that

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:53, on Zulip):

it may also involve a q&a session that could happen async on zulip

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:54, on Zulip):

@Santiago Pastorino ah so I record a talk alone?

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:54, on Zulip):

I could I suppose write the chapter myself if that's more helpful

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:54, on Zulip):

no no, usually what we do is a Zoom session or something like that

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:54, on Zulip):

ah yeah

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:54, on Zulip):

where you or somebody explain some things

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:54, on Zulip):

then we can ask questions

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:55, on Zulip):

and we write the chapter

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:55, on Zulip):

right

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:55, on Zulip):

if you want to write the chapter that totally works too :)

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:55, on Zulip):

whatever is most helpful

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:55, on Zulip):

the most important result is to have chapters and a better rustc-dev-guide

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:56, on Zulip):

so I'd say is better to have a chapter directly

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:56, on Zulip):

but usually people don't have time for that and prefer to do a lecture or a q&a session or something like that

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:56, on Zulip):

but if you can and want to do a chapter, we can keep asking questions and improving it async I'd say

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 14:56, on Zulip):

and it takes less time to prepare a lecture?

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:57, on Zulip):

I guess it depends :)

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:57, on Zulip):

if we open an editor and out of what you remember you start talking about things without preparing I guess it may take less time

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 14:58, on Zulip):

but if you prepare like a talk that's probably more work

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 15:00, on Zulip):

I wonder if someone else writing it down may produce notes about things I wouldn't think to write down

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 15:00, on Zulip):

like things I find obvious but others don't

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 15:01, on Zulip):

so maybe a lecture would be best

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 15:10, on Zulip):

yeah, I was going to say that too :)

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 15:11, on Zulip):

this is one of the reasons to do a lecture

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 16:38, on Zulip):

@centril just in case, should we schedule this? or do you want to take some time and then get back to us to schedule a date?

centril (Mar 18 2020 at 16:39, on Zulip):

@Santiago Pastorino I'll think a bit re. what the lecture could contain and then I'll get back to you

Santiago Pastorino (Mar 18 2020 at 16:39, on Zulip):

seems great thanks!

mark-i-m (Mar 18 2020 at 19:38, on Zulip):

@centril Thanks! Some thoughts regarding things you might include:

Chris Simpkins (Mar 18 2020 at 19:47, on Zulip):

@centril the parser is an area of interest for me. If I can be of any help turning your expertise into documentation, please let me know. Happy to help.
