Topic: How Salsa Work 2019.01

Francesco Dainese (Jul 25 2019 at 19:53, on Zulip):

Hey @nikomatsakis , I'm trying to summarize and write a chapter for the rustc-guide about your lecture, and I was struggling to hear 2 words about "base inputs" at 3:23, can you provide insight? Specifinally, I was able to understand this: They are not something that you **inaubible** but something that you kinda get **inaudible** from the outside

I'll let you know if I have further questions

Santiago Pastorino (Jul 25 2019 at 20:10, on Zulip):

@Francesco Dainese doesn't it say something like they are something that you kind of get set from the outside, kind of get given then

Santiago Pastorino (Jul 25 2019 at 20:10, on Zulip):

my english is not great but maybe that helps?

Santiago Pastorino (Jul 25 2019 at 20:10, on Zulip):

was just focusing on that particular phrase, wasn't paying attention really to what was he exactly explaining

Francesco Dainese (Jul 25 2019 at 20:13, on Zulip):

I agree on the "set from the outside", makes more sense than the "sucked from the outside" that I thought I was hearing.

The first word I think it's "compute", but I'm not entirely sure, that's why I wanted to ask him directly.

I can continue with the work either way, it's just that it's not as complete.

Francesco Dainese (Jul 25 2019 at 20:13, on Zulip):

As per how to actually submit the document, should I fork the repo and add it somewhere or ? @Santiago Pastorino

Santiago Pastorino (Jul 25 2019 at 20:28, on Zulip):

send a PR to rustc-guide

Santiago Pastorino (Jul 25 2019 at 20:29, on Zulip):

try to fit the work somewhere or just add a new file with the chapter and we can figure out where to place it

Santiago Pastorino (Jul 25 2019 at 20:29, on Zulip):

@nikomatsakis is on vacations, try to reach him out in a couple of weeks maybe

Francesco Dainese (Jul 25 2019 at 20:31, on Zulip):

Oh, I saw him hold meetings today so I thought he had come back

Francesco Dainese (Jul 25 2019 at 21:58, on Zulip):

I wanted to submit my work today but I wanted to check how mdbook rendered it, so I installed it, along with linkcheck and I got a whole bunch of complaints from the plugin, not related to my work.
I'll try fix it tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm attaching how_salsa_works.md

Francesco Dainese (Jul 26 2019 at 20:00, on Zulip):

I was able to get it to build by adding
traverse-parent-directories = true
in book.toml

Francesco Dainese (Jul 26 2019 at 22:35, on Zulip):

#401 has been made

Pascal (Jul 27 2019 at 15:55, on Zulip):

Have you seen this part of the rust-analyzer guide? feel free to use/adapt the illustrations i made :)

Francesco Dainese (Jul 27 2019 at 19:30, on Zulip):

@Pascal No, I was not aware of that. I've checked it out and I don't know if it's a fit for rustc-guide. I'm actually wondering if the chapter itself is a fit for rustc-guide  ... Thanks tho, I already saw where I could fit those illustrations

nikomatsakis (Aug 07 2019 at 09:00, on Zulip):

@Francesco Dainese sorry, been very sporadically following up on things here -- @Santiago Pastorino's translation sounded about right to me though
