@WG-learning Meeting in ~12 minutes!

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:18, on Zulip):

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:30, on Zulip):

@WG-learning :wave: meeting time

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:31, on Zulip):

thanks @mark-i-m for reminding everyone a bit beforehand

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:31, on Zulip):

first, let's start with news

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:31, on Zulip):

was someone able to make some progress with summarizing guides?

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:31, on Zulip):

We are now using mdbook-linkcheck 0.4, which has caching

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:32, on Zulip):

:party_ball:

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:32, on Zulip):

(deleted)

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 17 2019 at 19:33, on Zulip):

I have not done anything and I was planning to start with the video we decided to do together. Am I mistaken in think on those lines?

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:34, on Zulip):

no no, that's fine

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:34, on Zulip):

btw, unsure if you @mark-i-m and @Iñaki Garay had the opportunity to check last meeting logs

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:35, on Zulip):

we are going to do a pass over one chapter together

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:35, on Zulip):

I skimmed the meeting notes, but kind of missed that

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:35, on Zulip):

Could you give a quick summary?

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:36, on Zulip):

Also, I added some info on how to fix toolstate in https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/196385-t-compiler.2Fwg-learning/topic/guide-toolstate

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:36, on Zulip):

@Amanjeev Sethi @Tshepang Lekhonkhobe and me are going to watch this lecture https://github.com/rust-lang/rustc-guide/issues/375

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:36, on Zulip):

try to get some info about it, try to understand, try to gather questions and then we are going to get @nikomatsakis to answer them

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:36, on Zulip):

the idea is to get a chapter about it done

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:36, on Zulip):

we decided that it may worth trying to do some of these lectures in groups

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:37, on Zulip):

given that it's being harder to do that solo

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:38, on Zulip):

:+1: Ah, this is a good ide

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:38, on Zulip):

*idea

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:38, on Zulip):

I saw the notifications but was unable to read the full log. I haven't made more progress than what is currently in my branch. A group effort makes a bit of sense.

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 17 2019 at 19:38, on Zulip):

And also then if more than one person is interested in a lecture, they can still do it.

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 17 2019 at 19:38, on Zulip):

(I certainly hold very less knowledge and could use help from others)

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:38, on Zulip):

Also I've been really into $JOB lately and moving from one town to another.

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:39, on Zulip):

:+1:

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:39, on Zulip):

we may ping you about that lecture because if I'm not wrong was assigned to you

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:39, on Zulip):

Exactly, just because I claimed it about two months ago doesn't mean it should be held up, nor that other can't add their own takes on it

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:39, on Zulip):

sure

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:39, on Zulip):

we can reuse what you have maybe

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:40, on Zulip):

Do you have that joint watching scheduled? I may be able to participate

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:40, on Zulip):

all you have is on your PR?

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:40, on Zulip):

I'll double check my local but I believe so

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:40, on Zulip):

Do you have that joint watching scheduled? I may be able to participate

the idea is that everyone watches the lecture, takes notes, questions, etc and we will have a meeting next week

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:41, on Zulip):

between just us, to in group try to understand all that

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:41, on Zulip):

great

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:41, on Zulip):

and then if there's more stuff to discuss and doubts, we have the nikosignal, and he is coming to rescue :joy:

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:42, on Zulip):

Cool

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:42, on Zulip):

I don't know if this has been said before in any of the past 4 meetings, but I initially underestimated the effort it takes to summarize a lecture

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:42, on Zulip):

perhaps others have had similar experiences

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:42, on Zulip):

hmm... that's useful feedback

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:43, on Zulip):

not in the sense of time it takes, but in mental effort to understand enough to produce useful output

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:43, on Zulip):

so a study group for a single lecture/topic is exactly what I would have proposed had I been more around

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:43, on Zulip):

that's great to hear

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:43, on Zulip):

/cc @nikomatsakis

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 17 2019 at 19:43, on Zulip):

I agree with @Iñaki Garay. The effort is more than I expected as well. It may take more time as well in case you do it over a few weeks or days so the context switching is even tougher, given they are videos (and not articles).

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:44, on Zulip):

my thinking was "one weekend, one lecture", and was way off

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:44, on Zulip):

yeah, we assumed more or less the same, that's why we are trying to do something together

Iñaki Garay (Sep 17 2019 at 19:44, on Zulip):

other lectures/topics may be more basic or simpler

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:46, on Zulip):

Any other announcements?

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:47, on Zulip):

I don't think there's more announcements

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:47, on Zulip):

from the agenda we have

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:47, on Zulip):
Procedure for debugging and fixing toolstate
    Schedule discussion about LLVM/Codegen?
mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:48, on Zulip):

So for the first one

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:48, on Zulip):

I created this thread in zulip: https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/196385-t-compiler.2Fwg-learning/topic/guide-toolstate

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:48, on Zulip):

Hopefully it answers any necessary question

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:49, on Zulip):

The idea is that it would be great if regressions could be fixed within a few days

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:50, on Zulip):

Usually I fix them, but I haven't gotten a chance to look at the most recent CI failures (broken links)

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:51, on Zulip):

@mark-i-m have just checked the stuff you wrote on the guide-toolstate thread

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:51, on Zulip):

it's great

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:51, on Zulip):

were you planning to add that in rustc-guide or forge?

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:52, on Zulip):

Perhaps an appendix in the guide?

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:52, on Zulip):

whatever :+1:

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:52, on Zulip):

Or it could be added to the bottom of the README

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:52, on Zulip):

?

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:53, on Zulip):

Whatever is most convenient for everyone

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:53, on Zulip):

yeah forge procedures seems more like infra stuff

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 17 2019 at 19:54, on Zulip):

&self section

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:55, on Zulip):

@mark-i-m was checking forge

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:55, on Zulip):

https://forge.rust-lang.org/compiler/bug-fix-procedure.html

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:55, on Zulip):

there are some compiler procedures there

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:55, on Zulip):

hmm

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 19:55, on Zulip):

it seems to be a better fit or yeah the README

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:58, on Zulip):

:+1:

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 19:58, on Zulip):

I can add it there

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 20:00, on Zulip):

ok

Santiago Pastorino (Sep 17 2019 at 20:00, on Zulip):

I guess that's all?

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 17 2019 at 20:00, on Zulip):

I think that is all from my side at least

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 20:01, on Zulip):

Next topic?

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 20:01, on Zulip):

Oh we are out of town

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 20:01, on Zulip):

*time

mark-i-m (Sep 17 2019 at 20:04, on Zulip):

can someone write up meeting notes?

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 17 2019 at 20:05, on Zulip):

I can do that.

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 17 2019 at 20:05, on Zulip):

Sometime later though.

Amanjeev Sethi (Sep 18 2019 at 00:49, on Zulip):

PR for meeting minutes https://github.com/rust-lang/compiler-team/pull/176

Tshepang Lekhonkhobe (Sep 18 2019 at 12:43, on Zulip):

could not join meeting... was on vacation

Tshepang Lekhonkhobe (Sep 18 2019 at 12:44, on Zulip):

glad to have read notes because I thought video watching was going to be together

Sergey Togi Dashnyam (Sep 23 2019 at 10:33, on Zulip):

Hi, sorry that I couldn't join the meeting.
I am in the process of finding a new job...gotta revisit algos & ds / React.js interview Q's...

I will provide a first draft of this lecture at the end of the week: https://github.com/rust-lang/rustc-guide/issues/358
