Topic: #54818 etherpad alternative

kennytm (Oct 04 2018 at 14:58, on Zulip):

what's the situation with etherpad?
it'd be nice if you could create gists owned by organisations, but that doesn't appear possible

@varkor FYI you could add a post to <https://github.com/orgs/rust-lang/teams/compiler>, however this will be private to the organization

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:02, on Zulip):

http://hackmd.io/ might be a good option

oli (Oct 04 2018 at 15:04, on Zulip):

I added some alternatives for etherpad to the compiler meeting etherpad, but I don't have the link and so I don't remember them

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:10, on Zulip):

https://public.etherpad-mozilla.org/p/rust-compiler-meeting

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:11, on Zulip):

actually we should probably make a tracking issue for the compiler team

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:11, on Zulip):

and just put the stuff there

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:11, on Zulip):

oh I'm sorry @Oli , I shoudl have linked to it as part of the meeting

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:11, on Zulip):

along with other kinds of information

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:11, on Zulip):

e.g., where we chat

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:11, on Zulip):

actually we should probably make a tracking issue for the compiler team

@nikomatsakis I sort of suggested this in the discussion that this spawned off of, no?

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:12, on Zulip):

maybe?

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:12, on Zulip):

I forget

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:12, on Zulip):

it was a good idea, if so :P

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:12, on Zulip):

it was here: https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/131828-t-compiler/subject/weekly.20meeting.202018-10-04/near/135187183

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:12, on Zulip):

but I was really sort of focused on etherpad alone

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:13, on Zulip):

and thus I was including that we would e.g. lock the issue to not allow comments

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:13, on Zulip):

Lets just do it.

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:14, on Zulip):

(and then wait for someone to complain that github is not a wiki  )

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:16, on Zulip):

Created #54818 and then closed it so that people will not have it show up in there lists of open issues.

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:16, on Zulip):

Now I'll just transcribe the etherpad to it.

oli (Oct 04 2018 at 15:17, on Zulip):

(and then wait for someone to complain that github is not a wiki  )

oli (Oct 04 2018 at 15:17, on Zulip):

we could just use a wiki

oli (Oct 04 2018 at 15:17, on Zulip):

like the one integrated into github

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:18, on Zulip):

@Oli what, you don't like the idea of #54818 getting drilled into your head every week?

oli (Oct 04 2018 at 15:18, on Zulip):

I'll probably know this number by heart in a month

nagisa (Oct 04 2018 at 15:22, on Zulip):

@pnkfelix at least need to get ourselves a nicer issue number like #55000

oli (Oct 04 2018 at 15:24, on Zulip):

we can just hijack an old issue number :P

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:29, on Zulip):

#1!

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:29, on Zulip):

/me had never looked at #1 before..

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:29, on Zulip):

We'll get so many false links at the bottom

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:29, on Zulip):

now, #1000 on the other hand ...

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:29, on Zulip):

wait, @pnkfelix, why did you close https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/54818 ?

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:29, on Zulip):

did we decide not to do this?

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:29, on Zulip):

so that it wouldn't show up in peoples lists of issues

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

oh, I think we should leave it open

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

but tag it as "meta" or something

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

hmm

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

closed sends a strong signal to me

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

that it is "not to be looked at" :)

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

Well

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

you don't need to look at the agenda

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

I guess this is serving a slightly different role than what I originally imagined

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:30, on Zulip):

which was more of a general "landing page" for t-compiler

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

and might indeed be best served by a distinct issue

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

Right, I'm only interesting in trying to drive the meeting

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

via some platform other than etherpad

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

still, i'd keep it open personally :)

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

if you want, I can lock it

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

I can too

pnkfelix (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

being a mod team member has its privileges

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

done

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

heh :) I guess any of us can

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 15:31, on Zulip):

given GH's rather "coarse grained" ACL model

DPC (Oct 04 2018 at 15:45, on Zulip):

might be a good idea to ask zulip to create a "notepad" based tool within the application. Though it will take time, might pay off in the long run and will be easier with it being on the same platform.

davidtwco (Oct 04 2018 at 15:46, on Zulip):

There is the stream description.

nagisa (Oct 04 2018 at 16:43, on Zulip):

@pnkfelix a bot would be nice so all you had to do is say "next"

nagisa (Oct 04 2018 at 16:43, on Zulip):

nagisa (Oct 04 2018 at 16:44, on Zulip):

/me is probably not volunteering

davidtwco (Oct 04 2018 at 16:45, on Zulip):

What about in the rustc guide? There's already a "About the compiler team" page?

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 16:46, on Zulip):

doesn't seem appropriate for an agenda..

nikomatsakis (Oct 04 2018 at 16:46, on Zulip):

i.e., people may want to add things etc.. I guess we mostly use nominated issues for that though
