Topic: How to change topic

centril (Jan 29 2019 at 10:42, on Zulip):

@davidtwco how do you move several messages to a new topic?

davidtwco (Jan 29 2019 at 10:43, on Zulip):

If you edit the topic of your message then you get an option to move just that message, move that and any of your subsequent messages or move that and all subsequent messages.

davidtwco (Jan 29 2019 at 10:43, on Zulip):

(you need to actually change the topic, not just show the field for that)

davidtwco (Jan 29 2019 at 10:43, on Zulip):

(once you start typing the new topic, the dropdown shows up)

centril (Jan 29 2019 at 10:45, on Zulip):

that's... not super intuitive; a drag and drop would have been nice

pnkfelix (Jan 29 2019 at 11:03, on Zulip):

What, drag-and-drop with a subsequent pop-up to indicate whether its just the message or the message and all following messages or all messages before and after?

davidtwco (Jan 29 2019 at 11:04, on Zulip):

That or have a little checkbox so you can select multiple before dragging or support shift/ctrl click.

pnkfelix (Jan 29 2019 at 11:04, on Zulip):

I don't know, I think once you know how to do it, its fine. And since changing the topic to an existing topic is a destructive act, I think its a double-plus good thing that it is not-intuitive

davidtwco (Jan 29 2019 at 11:04, on Zulip):

To drag to another topic, that topic needs to exist, which isn't always the case.

pnkfelix (Jan 29 2019 at 11:05, on Zulip):

(in other words, renaming to an entirely new topic name would either need the existing interface, or it would require drag-and-drop to a new target area with a title like "rename to new topic")

davidtwco (Jan 29 2019 at 11:05, on Zulip):

There are absolutely ways to make it easier to do or more intuitive. Almost all of us have had to be told how to.

pnkfelix (Jan 29 2019 at 11:09, on Zulip):

Is the non-intuitiveness arising because people don't realize that editing the topic is even an option (since when you hit the drop-down for your own message it just says "Edit"?) I see the phrase "Edit Topic" for other peoples' messages, but maybe that's a capability that I have but not others?

davidtwco (Jan 29 2019 at 11:09, on Zulip):

As I understand it, only admins can edit the topics of others (unless they never set one and it is (no topic)).

davidtwco (Jan 29 2019 at 11:10, on Zulip):

But there's no indication that editing the topic will let you move, even once you click it, you need to change the topic before that option is surfaced.

centril (Jan 29 2019 at 12:21, on Zulip):

I'd do the shift/click thingy; it works intuitively like a file explorer
