Stream: new members

Topic: onboarding

Welcome Bot (May 03 2018 at 17:18, on Zulip):

A #new members stream is great for onboarding new members.

If you're reading this and aren't the first person here, introduce yourself in a new thread using your name as the topic! Type c or click on New Topic at the bottom of the screen to start a new topic.

Michael Pankov (Jul 13 2018 at 07:46, on Zulip):

Hi there

alercah (Jul 31 2018 at 06:48, on Zulip):

hi. yet another chat I see XD

Alexander Regueiro (Aug 01 2018 at 06:53, on Zulip):

Is everything migrating over from Discord or what?

eddyb (Aug 01 2018 at 11:39, on Zulip):

discord was technically temporary shrug

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:21, on Zulip):

/me is so confused, is this stream specific to Rust stuff?

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:22, on Zulip):

I've been assuming that #new members was for anyone on Zulipchat

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:34, on Zulip):

Everything in this is specific to Rust.

simulacrum (Aug 01 2018 at 12:40, on Zulip):

It's similar to discord in that this is our "server"

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:43, on Zulip):

How can I see the server info in the UI?

simulacrum (Aug 01 2018 at 12:44, on Zulip):

hm, possibly in the upper right hand corner there's a gear, but if you're using the web version then it's rust-lang.zulipchat.com which is clearly specific to us :)

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:44, on Zulip):

i.e. when I look at the stream settings here, I don't see anything about a server specific to rust, so I had assumed this was general Zulip stuff. (Which I can see the #announce and #zulip streams are in a separate area of the left-hand panel, but I don't know how that panel is arranged)

simulacrum (Aug 01 2018 at 12:44, on Zulip):

https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#organization/organization-profile

simulacrum (Aug 01 2018 at 12:45, on Zulip):

(no idea if that'll work for you)

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:45, on Zulip):

I'm still trying to figure out where one sees rust-lang.zulipchat.com from the pop-up that comes when I click the gear

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:45, on Zulip):

I see that because I use Zulip in the browser.

simulacrum (Aug 01 2018 at 12:46, on Zulip):

pasted image

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:46, on Zulip):

my web browser page doesn't show it

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:46, on Zulip):

OH in the url!

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:46, on Zulip):

okay

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:47, on Zulip):

oh so even #zulip and #announce are rust-specific

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:47, on Zulip):

?

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:47, on Zulip):

I see, there's also the gear in the upper right side of the whole UI

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:48, on Zulip):

The panel on the left just shows all the streams you have joined, and optionally at the top streams that you have pinned. The whole server is for the Rust organization and all the streams in it are specific to us.

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:48, on Zulip):

I was focused on the gear in the upper right side of the panel on the left

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:48, on Zulip):

and I had assumed this web interface was somehow hooked into multiple servers

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:48, on Zulip):

but there's just one server,. and it has multiple streams, which in turn have multiple topics

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:48, on Zulip):

Yeah, new streams can be created and joined from the gear for the streams and whole server settings (or specific users) with the gear at the top right.

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:48, on Zulip):

Yeah.

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:49, on Zulip):

The "primary" Zulip for the Zulip devs is chat.zulipchat.com

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:49, on Zulip):

I probably understood this right when I first started using zulip, and then immediately forgot

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:49, on Zulip):

The "primary" Zulip for the Zulip devs is chat.zulipchat.com

" There is no Zulip organization hosted at this subdomain. "

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:50, on Zulip):

Oops, it is https://chat.zulip.org/ - I just guessed from memory.

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:50, on Zulip):

I knew it was chat but assumed it has the same domain as ours.

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:51, on Zulip):

great maybe I can look there to see what people are doing about the problems on iOS

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:52, on Zulip):

I was chatting with the co-founder of Zulip a few weeks ago briefly, they've got a bunch of people dedicated to the mobile apps as of recently because they're not great.

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:53, on Zulip):

In particular, https://chat.zulip.org/#narrow/stream/137-feedback/topic/rust-project and https://chat.zulip.org/#narrow/stream/50-publicity/topic/rust-project - both of which I posted links to in the Internals topics about choosing a chat platform for the Rust project.

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:53, on Zulip):

this sounds like it might be promising: https://github.com/zulip/zulip-mobile/issues/1888

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:54, on Zulip):

except I worry that they may not understand that there are scenarios where the most important thing is that you get to zoom to whatever the conversation is that is happening right now, even if it means you skip over the backlog

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:54, on Zulip):

i.e. if you are participating in a live mtg via chat

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:54, on Zulip):

I've found I've gotten used to the mobile app more and more, the only thing that still bugs me is that the little green down arrow doesn't take me to "right now".

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:55, on Zulip):

It seems to paginate in some strange way.

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:55, on Zulip):

exactly. and the conversations I see indicate that they think the "right way" to use zulip is to always jump solely to the first unread (where I interpret "first" as meaning "first with respect to time")

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 12:56, on Zulip):

while you and I want sometimes to jump to now, aka "last unread"

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 12:56, on Zulip):

Yeah, that's often what I want to do. They seemed very receptive to feedback when I spoke to them so I'd hope it's something they'd add.

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 13:49, on Zulip):

@RalfJ does this look interleaved to you?

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 13:50, on Zulip):

oh thats a different stream. aha.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 13:50, on Zulip):

no it doesnt interlave different streams

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 13:57, on Zulip):

no it doesnt interlave different streams

weird, it does for me. Like this:

pasted image

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 13:58, on Zulip):

oh, ah. it does when I select "all messages"

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 13:58, on Zulip):

which I never considered doing^^

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 13:59, on Zulip):

There's no way to show messages from multiple streams other than "all messages" so in some regards it doesn't really interleave them.

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 13:59, on Zulip):

hmm, maybe the search panel would let you

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 13:59, on Zulip):

well hows that not interleaving them?^^

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 13:59, on Zulip):

all messages = all streams seems like a reasonable "completion" of the model here

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 13:59, on Zulip):

(and also you can get the topics from one stream interleaved by selecting the stream itself)

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 13:59, on Zulip):

yes I have seen that

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:00, on Zulip):

hm, having to click twice is annoying

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:00, on Zulip):

select stream, then click msg to reply to

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:00, on Zulip):

Well, yeah, it does interleave them, I just find I rarely use "all messages" so in my normal use it doesn't interleave streams.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:00, on Zulip):

also why does it scroll up and leave a bunch of unused white space below the last msg?

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:00, on Zulip):

hmm, maybe the search panel would let you

answer: no, the search semantics are to take the AND of the criteria, not an OR

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:01, on Zulip):

select stream, then click msg to reply to

(there is a keyboard interface if that is easier for you than clicking)

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:01, on Zulip):

The keyboard icon in the bottom right corner brings up the shortcuts.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:01, on Zulip):

its still two actions is what I mean

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:02, on Zulip):

instead of just typing which is what I am used to

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:02, on Zulip):

instead of just typing which is what I am used to

if you leave the reply box open

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:02, on Zulip):

then that can make it easier

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:02, on Zulip):

argh this whitespace drives me crazy^^ I usually just scroll down as far as I can, but here that leave shalf the screen empty so now I have to manually perfectly align the bottommost msg with the screen

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:02, on Zulip):

(that combined with "Press Enter to send")

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:03, on Zulip):

has to be perfectly aligned, obviously :P

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:03, on Zulip):

(that combined with "Press Enter to send")

yeah that as the first thing I did

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:03, on Zulip):

hmm I hadn't noticed the white space before but now I'm sure its going to annoy me

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:03, on Zulip):

sorry^^

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:03, on Zulip):

Though, press enter to send is always set (or never set, I forget) when editing messages. I've got an issue open for that.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:03, on Zulip):

its never set for editing

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:04, on Zulip):

and arrow-up also doesnt edit the last msg

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:04, on Zulip):

hmm apparently you need to first arrow up and then hit 'i', 'enter' ?

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:05, on Zulip):

that depends on what you had selected

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:05, on Zulip):

true

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:05, on Zulip):

so you want to first jump to your own last message, then?

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:05, on Zulip):

yeah

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:05, on Zulip):

argh keyborad navigation screwed up my aligned whitespace :P

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:06, on Zulip):

apparently 'left' arrow is edit your last message?

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:06, on Zulip):

(See keyboard shortcuts, either by hitting '?' or by clicking the keyboard icon next to the "Press Enter to Send" checkbox)

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:07, on Zulip):

thats not where the icon is when that checkox is checked :)

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:07, on Zulip):

its all the way in the bottom right corner here

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:07, on Zulip):

That's probably just the screen resolution.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:07, on Zulip):

woah so many shortcuts

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:08, on Zulip):

thats not where the icon is when that checkox is checked :)

ah, yeah, in the web browser interface its on the bottom right like you describe

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:08, on Zulip):

but in the dedicated (Atom?) app, its screwed up and is squished up next to the "Press Enter to Send" label

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:08, on Zulip):

I like the general idea I think, but it triggers two things I am kind of (not really) OCD'ing about^^

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:09, on Zulip):

the whitespace thing and that blue selection box

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:09, on Zulip):

I usually click in whitespace on websites to get rid of any selection boxes

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:09, on Zulip):

I dont even notice it any more

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:09, on Zulip):

but here I (a) cannot get rid of it and (b) clicking in whitespace makes the chat box go away^^

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:10, on Zulip):

That might be worth a bug report of some kind

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:10, on Zulip):

it does seem to be unintuitive UI

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:10, on Zulip):

well its consistent with not having a check box when I enter a stream

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:10, on Zulip):

oh now it also didnt scroll down when a new msg came. odd?

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:11, on Zulip):

now I'm waiting to see if it scrolls down for me when I have a message far back in the history selected

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:11, on Zulip):

test

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:11, on Zulip):

yeah doesn't seem to.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:11, on Zulip):

when you select the bottom it moves up

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:11, on Zulip):

and then when that moved to the top

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

Which... makes sense, if my goal is to actually interact with that message

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

it stops scrolling

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

hmm

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

but it means I cannot just keep chatting in a topic

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

without selecting a new msg all the time

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

right?

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

do I really spend all my time clicking more recwent messages without even realizing it?

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

which certainly doesnt sound right for a chat app

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

it doesn't seem reasonable

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

and yet

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

really right now I am just filling up my screen

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

I keep typing

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

and now

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

to confirm... yes, confirmed

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:12, on Zulip):

yeah okay this is bad

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

so I guess I've gotten used to clicking

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

lol

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

because I'm often tweaking the most recent messages I've sent

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

you can of course hit 'G'

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

to jump to the last message

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

but that requires killing the reply box

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

I think it only seems bad when you think about it because it's never been something we've noticed until now.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

g opens the menu though

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

and the whole point right now

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

so G is two keys to press

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

is to optimize for having the reply box open

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

...

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:13, on Zulip):

you really distinguish 'g' from 'G' ?

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:14, on Zulip):

I dont, the website does

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:14, on Zulip):

you must be a vi user. :)

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:14, on Zulip):

no i mean in terms of keystrokes

DPC (Aug 01 2018 at 14:14, on Zulip):

give it some time i guess

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:14, on Zulip):

@pnkfelix well I am used to shortcuts not having implicit shift

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:14, on Zulip):

like, Ctrl-V doesnt involve shift

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:14, on Zulip):

but whoever built this thing though making g and G separate shortcuts was a good idea

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:15, on Zulip):

which seems rather odd

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:15, on Zulip):

true, it does seem unintuitive (again)

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:15, on Zulip):

well I am noticing it very much right now @David Wood and I have to say it is really annoying^^

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:15, on Zulip):

I cant just, you know, chat

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:15, on Zulip):

Fair enough.

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:15, on Zulip):

sigh, niko and i love zulip but @eddyb and @RalfJ are going to make me hate it by pointing out all these flaws

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:15, on Zulip):

I have to Esc - Shift-G - r all the time

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:16, on Zulip):

and then half the screen is white^^

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:16, on Zulip):

@pnkfelix I love parts of it^^

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

but yeah, selecting a msg seems like the wrong thing

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

Do you need to Shift-G before r? If you reply from any message in the topic it gets posted at the bottom doesn't it?

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

test

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

its not even meaningful, you cannot see which msg was selected

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

Yeah.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

it should be selecting a topic

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

Do you need to Shift-G before r? If you reply from any message in the topic it gets posted at the bottom doesn't it?

Yes but I cannot see it

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

because some old message is still selected. which was the latest message 90sec ago.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:18, on Zulip):

and then it doesnt scroll to new msgs

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:19, on Zulip):

I guess once you hit 'r' then you see what topic it was

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:19, on Zulip):

in the UI

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:19, on Zulip):

but of course that's easy to overlook

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:19, on Zulip):

you also see that in the msg view?

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:19, on Zulip):

there's always a topic box

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:19, on Zulip):

I see.

davidtwco (Aug 01 2018 at 14:19, on Zulip):

(that is, I see what you mean, not that I would see the new message)

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:19, on Zulip):

(that is, I see what you mean, not that I would see the new message)

:P

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:20, on Zulip):

there's always a topic box

I can't tell if you're agreeing with me.

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:20, on Zulip):

but yes, the stream and the topic are in the reply interface?

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:20, on Zulip):

yeah so I think thats a tiny hange that would make it perfect: allow selecting a topic, and then ne msgs in that opic are scrolled to and it aligns the whitespace

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:21, on Zulip):

when clicking a topic on the left, select it

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:21, on Zulip):

keep msg selection, that's actually great for editing the next-to-last msgs without going to the mouse! I love that part. always missed it in other chats.

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:21, on Zulip):

but always having to have a single msg selected is not reflecting how chat works...

pnkfelix (Aug 01 2018 at 14:21, on Zulip):

yeah so I think thats a tiny hange that would make it perfect: allow selecting a topic, and then ne msgs in that opic are scrolled to and it aligns the whitespace

This seems like a good feature request

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:22, on Zulip):

I can't tell if you're agreeing with me.

well you made a factual statement, I wasnt sure where you were going

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:23, on Zulip):

yeah so I think thats a tiny hange that would make it perfect: allow selecting a topic, and then ne msgs in that opic are scrolled to and it aligns the whitespace

This seems like a good feature request

test

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:23, on Zulip):

quote and reply is nice :D

RalfJ (Aug 01 2018 at 14:23, on Zulip):

and I like how no mouse is needed for all that. msg selection really shines there.

DPC (Aug 01 2018 at 15:33, on Zulip):

yeah

Alexander Regueiro (Aug 03 2018 at 07:42, on Zulip):

Ugh, Zulip is really not good. Why are we on it now? The UX is terrible.

RalfJ (Aug 03 2018 at 09:04, on Zulip):

do you have some concrete things that are bothering you?

the UX is certainly unusual but it has a couple features I always missed in other chat systems, like threads

RalfJ (Aug 03 2018 at 09:04, on Zulip):

Well, mattermost has threads. but Zulip does them way better.

DPC (Aug 03 2018 at 09:06, on Zulip):

he might be on the app

detrumi (Aug 08 2018 at 17:29, on Zulip):

Even though it took me a minute to get it, I like that streams are opt-in, whereas you can't properly hide channels in Discord

memoryruins (Aug 08 2018 at 17:36, on Zulip):

If you mute a channel then enable "hide muted channels" for a server in Discord, it will vanish entirely (unless if someone @ pings you, then it re-appears temporarily). This is my first day using Zulip, but I am quickly warming up to the organization of individual issues from github/specific topics having their own threads. Easy to catch up on some discussions for specific issues on github.

detrumi (Aug 08 2018 at 17:38, on Zulip):

Yeah, keeping context around is a huge win

detrumi (Aug 08 2018 at 18:05, on Zulip):

Also, if I want to follow even a single channel in a category on discord, I can't collapse the category at all. Which results in me having to scroll every time between the general channels at the top, and some of the dev-tools channels at the bottom

DPC (Aug 08 2018 at 19:26, on Zulip):

yeah the threads are really useful.

RalfJ (Aug 08 2018 at 22:43, on Zulip):

@memoryruins the part about channels re-appearing when you are mentioned is not true

RalfJ (Aug 08 2018 at 22:43, on Zulip):

I have "hide muted channels" set, nd what happens whne I get mentione di one is that I get a mytserious mention that I cannot follow until I show muted channels again

memoryruins (Aug 08 2018 at 22:52, on Zulip):

Strange. I recreated it moments ago to be sure -- the hidden channel re-appeared, grey, and with the red ping box next to it. Regardless, the opt-outs on discord are not obvious, and much less flexible than here.

RalfJ (Aug 09 2018 at 07:44, on Zulip):

@memoryruins strange. are you sure you are not talking about collapsed groups?

RalfJ (Aug 09 2018 at 07:44, on Zulip):

when I just collapse a group, mentions are shown

RalfJ (Aug 09 2018 at 07:45, on Zulip):

but when I have the channels hidden this way -- which hides entire groups -- I do not see anything. You could try mentioning me in a channel that is not in the lang team group.

memoryruins (Aug 09 2018 at 08:20, on Zulip):

I tested with the channel muted, muted channels hidden, and the group collapsed in a private server with a second account. I'll ping you in discord in a moment ^^

RalfJ (Aug 09 2018 at 09:18, on Zulip):

Nope, the channel does not show up at all.

RalfJ (Aug 09 2018 at 09:19, on Zulip):

the mention shwos up in the "@" button at least so I can click there to jump

memoryruins (Aug 09 2018 at 09:21, on Zulip):

It might need a tweak in your global user settings or the notif settings you have set for the server

memoryruins (Aug 09 2018 at 09:22, on Zulip):

the worst type of granularity, where I can't even suggest the exact combination thats needed

RalfJ (Aug 09 2018 at 09:31, on Zulip):

Looking at that, I cannot see anything that should have this effect

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:22, on Zulip):

ahhh how am I supposed to use this thing

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:22, on Zulip):

I'm scrolling through the entire history of every channel to get to present day

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:23, on Zulip):

surely there must be a better way to on-board

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:24, on Zulip):

(in the mobile app)

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:27, on Zulip):

I also can't see dates, only times...

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:30, on Zulip):

and doing so in the nll stream just absolutely destroys the app- hangs, blank screens, crashes...

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:30, on Zulip):

plus apparently none of this scrolling is even remembered so why bother

memoryruins (Sep 22 2018 at 19:31, on Zulip):

the "scroll to bottom" button on mobile is not great https://github.com/zulip/zulip-mobile/issues/1974
and dates is also an open issue for mobile https://github.com/zulip/zulip-mobile/issues/1336 (on desktop, rollover the time for the date)

memoryruins (Sep 22 2018 at 19:32, on Zulip):

zulip is nice for individual focused issues on desktop, but the mobile app struggles on my end too

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:39, on Zulip):

oh weird and your messages don't show up on the whole-stream view, only in the onboarding thread

memoryruins (Sep 22 2018 at 19:42, on Zulip):

you might need to click the # on the bottom menu, then "All Streams" on the top right tab that appears, then click the enable #new members to be apart of your all stream view

rpjohnst (Sep 22 2018 at 19:43, on Zulip):

already done (any this most recent of your messages does show up in the whole-steam view)

blitzerr (Sep 22 2018 at 22:53, on Zulip):

How can I translate a MoveOutIndex in a line of code?

nikomatsakis (Sep 24 2018 at 17:04, on Zulip):

@blitzerr (wrong stream/topic — but did you get your question answered?)

dlrobertson (Dec 10 2018 at 23:00, on Zulip):

When posting questions on zulip is it typically recommended to post it as a new topic or post to a new one?

dlrobertson (Dec 10 2018 at 23:41, on Zulip):

Sorry, i realize now this would probably be more relevant in the zulip channel :frowning:

Keith Yeung (Dec 11 2018 at 00:03, on Zulip):

i know NLL has a general discussion topic, so you can look for that first and see if it exists on your stream

RalfJ (Dec 11 2018 at 07:52, on Zulip):

post it as a new topic or post to a new one?

I don't understand the distinction here? But yes I think a new topic per question is a good idea!
