Topic: is zulip any good?

Aaron Turon (May 03 2018 at 18:49, on Zulip):

starting a new topic to see how it works...

ag_dubs (May 03 2018 at 18:49, on Zulip):

it is kinda nice that the new topic just popped up

Steve Klabnik (May 03 2018 at 18:49, on Zulip):

woo

ag_dubs (May 03 2018 at 18:49, on Zulip):

making an effort to not be totally negative

Michael Pankov (Jul 13 2018 at 08:30, on Zulip):

seems pretty nice to me

DPC (Jul 13 2018 at 09:10, on Zulip):

yeah i like the threaded conversations though I wonder how well it will scale in future

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 07:00, on Zulip):

Getting an email every time I log in to Zulip is pretty annoying :/

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 07:01, on Zulip):

Reading the attitude of the developers in this regard does not give me much hope that the situation will improve in the near future:

Like any good security citizens, we send notification emails to tell a user that there's been a new login to their account.

No idea where they are getting that from, but in my book, showing meaningless "Account Security" messages on every login does not help security. It helps to train people to ignore security messages.

DPC (Aug 06 2018 at 07:07, on Zulip):

@RalfJ i guess you can turn it off in preferences

DPC (Aug 06 2018 at 07:07, on Zulip):

every login is annoying though. I wish they change it to alert you only on a new system

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 08:19, on Zulip):

@DPC if you find the option to turn it off in the settings, please let me know

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 08:19, on Zulip):

I found an open feature request in their github to make this configurable per-user

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 08:20, on Zulip):

(I assume it already is configurable by the instance admin?)

davidtwco (Aug 06 2018 at 09:00, on Zulip):

I rarely am on machines where I log out, I normally log in once on each machine and then that's it, so I don't get repeat emails. I can see how that might be a tad annoying.

DPC (Aug 06 2018 at 09:02, on Zulip):

@RalfJ yeah i just checked there is no such setting.

DPC (Aug 06 2018 at 09:03, on Zulip):

yeah same here david. my browser reloads previous session so I'm never logged out

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 09:03, on Zulip):

@davidtwco I assume you also keep cookies over browser restarts? I don't, so most sites think that this is a "new computer" every time I log in.

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 09:04, on Zulip):

I think restricting cookie lifetime like that is a much bigger security (and privacy) win than notifications on every login (which are false positives 99% of the time anyway)

davidtwco (Aug 06 2018 at 09:07, on Zulip):

@RalfJ yeah, that makes sense. I prefer the convenience of keeping the cookies but there's definitely a trade-off there.

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 09:09, on Zulip):

@davidtwco I have a whitelist for a select few sites where I keep cookies, so I get most of the convenience. I guess I could add zulip to that whitelist... I suppose that should help.

davidtwco (Aug 06 2018 at 09:09, on Zulip):

That seems like a reasonable solution until the Zulip people make the emails configurable.

RalfJ (Aug 06 2018 at 09:10, on Zulip):

For discord whitelisting somehow doesnt help, but maybe it helps here

toidiu (Aug 24 2018 at 15:12, on Zulip):

is there a way to mark a topic "closed" or "archived"? so lets say that we have reached a conclusion and dont want back pedaling but also want to retain the conversations for historic purpose

davidtwco (Aug 24 2018 at 15:13, on Zulip):

No, normally the topic just stops being used and slowly sinks to the bottom of the list as new topics are created and used more recently.

toidiu (Aug 24 2018 at 15:15, on Zulip):

I like the "protected" by an administrator feature that SO has. although now we are mixing documentation and chat.. hmm

Jake Goulding (Aug 24 2018 at 16:06, on Zulip):

@toidiu that's an exception on SO though. Normally for things that attract junk/spam answers or that used to be on-topic but no longer are

Jake Goulding (Aug 24 2018 at 16:07, on Zulip):

Seems like github's "locked and limited" is more accurate

Jake Goulding (Aug 24 2018 at 16:08, on Zulip):

but I agree that if something should be preserved it should be in a different form than zulip

Jake Goulding (Aug 24 2018 at 16:08, on Zulip):

markdown in git FTW: plain text; versioned; open source for when git dies

nagisa (Nov 15 2018 at 13:50, on Zulip):

Does anybody know where to report issues with the web interface?

nagisa (Nov 15 2018 at 13:50, on Zulip):

I can’t seem to find a repository for the web UI on https://github.com/zulip

davidtwco (Nov 15 2018 at 13:53, on Zulip):

It's all one repo, just submit an issue.

davidtwco (Nov 15 2018 at 13:53, on Zulip):

https://github.com/zulip/zulip

davidtwco (Nov 15 2018 at 13:53, on Zulip):

I think only the mobile apps are separate repos.

oli (Nov 26 2018 at 09:13, on Zulip):

One problem that was just encountered is that one cannot link to a conversation in zulip without everyone who wants to read it having to login

oli (Nov 26 2018 at 09:14, on Zulip):

There are still various people reluctant to come here, and they are excluded from participating even passively

pnkfelix (Nov 27 2018 at 13:13, on Zulip):

This is definitely a problem.

centril (Nov 27 2018 at 13:14, on Zulip):

it's the same with Discord iirc

pnkfelix (Nov 27 2018 at 13:18, on Zulip):

(yep and its a problem there too.)

pnkfelix (Nov 27 2018 at 13:18, on Zulip):

obviously people worked around this in IRC via logging bots

mw (Nov 27 2018 at 13:32, on Zulip):

sounds like a viable solution.
